MeM Method: the value of interdisciplinary consulting alongside architects and companies.

Today more than ever, designers are called upon to translate complex needs, generating real well-being and interacting with increasingly complex contexts and communities.

This is why the MeM Method was established.

A methodology that supports architects by providing scientific knowledge, concrete tools, and cultural communication strategies, with a customised and adaptable approach.   Intellectual and design expertise, adaptable and customisable.

The MeM Method is an interdisciplinary consulting practice designed to support architects, interior designers, and design studios in every stage of a project: from the first concept to the project’s final communication.

You can rely on our support for:

  • a strategic vision that accounts for environmental psychology, colour, biology, and evolutionary psychology;
  • technical advice on chromatics, materials, perceptual quality, and environmental comfort;
  • a scientific design approach using the Bolten–Barbiero Protocol and scientific certification the Biophilic Quality Index (BQI; Berto e Barbiero, 2017), to give both value and measurability to your design choices;
  • clear and cohesive communication about what you are creating, with tools capable of conveying the cultural and relational impact of the project.

Together, we can create the solution best suited to your project, defining methods of design and levels of intervention based on the specific objectives and characteristics of the context.

A procedure that combines science, experience, and communication

The MeM Method is based on three key words:

Method, because every design decision is supported by validated scientific tools and measurable protocols. The Bolten–Barbiero Protocol, for example, allows the principles of Biophilic Design to be applied in an operational manner, while the Biophilic Quality Index (BQI; Berto e Barbiero, 2017) provides a tangible metric for measuring the regenerative quality of spaces. It is therefore not a matter of generic feelings or aesthetics, but of design choices guided by data, studies, and research concerning human behaviour, perception, and well-being.

Experience, because MeM always starts by deeply listening. Every project is a complex system made up of people, contexts, and needs. Whether it’s a classroom, a company reception area, or a day center for the elderly, our consulting services are adapted, modulated, and rooted in reality. We work alongside designers to build environments that welcome, guide, provide reassurance, or stimulate, according to defined and shared objectives.

Experience is not only the experience of the end user, but also that for the designer, who finds in MeM a skilled, responsive, and strategic partner.

Movement, because for us, designing also means activating cultural transformation. Each project then becomes an opportunity to spread awareness, generate social value, and create narratives that speak of care, respect, and vision. This is why we support each project with targeted communication tools: naming, storytelling, presentations, and dissemination materials. We aim to ensure that the project does not simply remain “confined within the space,” but rather becomes a visible, communicable, and shareable driver of change.

A team supporting your job

Through the MeM Method, your project can rely on scientifically recognized and certifiable tools, which add authority and credibility to your work. Two of our leading teachers, Bettina Bolten and Rita Berto, are affiliated with the Affective Ecology Laboratory – Green Leaf – at the University of Valle d’Aosta, and now put their scientific expertise at the service of the MeM Technical Committee.:

  • Bettina Bolten – Biophilic Design Consultant and Design & Brand Manager
  • Giorgia Donini – Strategic Marketing, systemic vision, founder of MeM
  • Massimo Caiazzo – Colour design expert, President of IACC Italia (International Association of Colour Consultants)
  • Rita Berto – Environmental psychologist, PhD in Perception and Psychophysics.

This team, alongside a network of experts and partners, stands ready to support those who design responsibly and wish to make a real impact through their work.

Wherever there is a real need to design with a focus on people, their wellbeing, and the quality of their experience in the space.

MeM is a versatile approach designed to adapt to a wide range of contexts, all of which are linked by a common need: to translate the space into a tool for interaction, regeneration, and value.

Here are some fields where our consulting services can make a difference:

Residential

Whether for new construction or renovation, MeM helps designers and private citizens to shape homes that are welcoming and reassuring, improving comfort, harmony, and mental and physical well-being.

Offices and corporate headquarters

In the world of work, spaces are never neutral: they influence concentration, relationships, and productivity. With MeM, you can design environments that reduce stress, stimulate creativity, and strengthen corporate identity through carefully measured design choices and targeted communication strategies.

Schools and educational spaces

The quality of the school environment has a profound influence not only on learning, inclusion, and attention in children, but also on the daily well-being of teachers and teaching staff, who are often under high levels of stress. We work with schools and designers to reimagine classrooms, hallways, and common areas as places that promote cognitive, relational, and emotional development. In collaboration with educators and foundations, every choice is made with the aim of creating spaces that encourage learning, inclusion, and well-being.

Nursing homes, healthcare, and care spaces

Spaces designed for recovery or care must guarantee comfort, safety, and perceptive and emotional orientation. With MeM, you can design or renovate environments that humanise care, improve the experience of patients and staff, and increase the perceived quality of services.

Retail e hospitality

Places of purchase and hospitality must create meaningful experiences. MeM supports you in integrating biophilic elements, sensory journeys, color identities, and natural materials into your project, generating emotional engagement and brand recognition.

Sports and wellness activities and leisure

Spaces designed for movement, socialising, or regeneration deserve a design that respects natural rhythms, promotes concentration or recovery, and stimulates motivation.

Even in these contexts, MeM offers solutions based on scientific studies that can be customised according to the users.

A tailor-made approach in every context

Whether it’s a school environment, an executive office, a private home, or a healthcare facility, MeM does not offer ready-made solutions. We offer a flexible and modular method that can be adapted to the specificities of your project and your objectives, with punctual interventions or structured paths, always based on concrete data and an integrated vision.

An approach based on practical tools

Through the MeM Method, your project can rely on recognised and certifiable scientific tools that add authority and credibility to your work:

  1. Bolten–Barbiero Protocol → operational guide for applying the principles of Biophilic Design
  2. Biophilic Quality Index (BQI; Berto e Barbiero, 2017) → tool for assessing and certifying the regenerative quality of environments
  3. Strategic communication → narratives, visual tools, and storytelling to communicate the results achieved

Projects that communicate and create culture

Today more than ever, communication is an essential part of the project. Yet we know how complex it can be to authentically convey topics such as environmental well-being, regeneration, biophilia, and sustainability.

That’s why MeM, with the support of ma:design, supports every project with clear, scientifically based storytelling that is consistent with the project’s values.

Whether it’s a school, a flagship store, or a senior living facility, MeM helps you:

  • communicate the deeper meaning behind design choices,
  • make the benefits obtained visible and understandable,
  • build tools (visuals, naming, storytelling) that enhance the project without simplifying it,
  • communicate with stakeholders, institutions, customers, or end users with an accessible but never superficial language.

Communication is part of the change process that the project generates. It is a cultural, educational, and strategic tool. it is what enables the value you have built to be understood, remembered, and shared.

A well-designed space generates real value. With MeM, you can also measure, certify, and communicate it with rigor.

The value of a space is not just about aesthetics. It is about the experience it creates, the emotions it evokes, and the connections it fosters.

Whether you are currently in the process of designing a school, an office, a retail space, or a therapeutic environment, we can work together to develop the most suitable approach: technical, strategic, communicative, or certification-based.
